I originaly had 256 of SDR ram installed. I just
installed 2 512's of DDR memory. They are PC2100 because
thats what my motherboard is suppose to use or at least
that's what the motherboard site says. Here's the problem
I'm having now. When I boot windows XP the first time It
starts to boot then goes to a black screen. I reboot it
and then it goes to a screen that says windows
encountered a problem. It also says it could be from a
recent hardware or software change. I get the options to
start in safe mode or last known good configuration. Does
anyone know what would be causing this.

Most motherboards do not support two different kinds of RAM.
The slots are different so the wrong type can't be
installed. SDRAM PC100/133 has 168 contacts and PC200/266
PC2100 has 184 contacts.
But if your motherboard has two types of RAM slots, you can
choose which type to run, but you can't run both types at
once (as far I know).
What motherboard do you have, make model?
If you didn't remove the SDRam when you installed the
PC2100, remove it and try again. You might need to open the
BIOS to set the mobo to see the RAM.

I took out the SDR before I installed the DDR. My
motherboard is an ECS K7S5A. I've had a few people tell
me that particular motherboard isn't that great. It does
have two DDR slots and 2 SDR slots. I'm just using the 2
DDR. When I first installed it my computer booted, but
only showed 512 instead of 1 gig. I took them out and put
them back in to make sure it wasn't from not putting them
in all the way. Then my 1 gig showed up. Then, on boot it
was showing only an 1100+ processor and I have a 1700+
AMD athlon. I found a site which another person had the
same problem and I did what they said which was to go
into the bios and change the 100/100 to 133/133. That
solved that problem. Maybe there is something else I have
to do in the bios? I dont know.

I took the SDR ram out before I put the DDR ram in. But
only 512 of it was showing up. I then took both of DDR's
out and put them back in again to make sure they were in
right, and my 1 gig showed up. Then, I booted it again
and it worked fine but the boot screen and My computer
properties was only showing an 1100+ processor and I have
a 1700+ AMD athlon processor. I found a site where
another guy had the same problem and I did what they said
to do which was go into the bios and I forget what it was
but I change something from 100/100 to 133/133. That took
care of that and I then had my 1700+ showing up. So I
don't know what to do.
My motherboard is a: ECS K7S5A
I've heard some people say that motherboard isn't vary
good, so I'm not sure if that is my problem. You think I
might have to something else in the bios?

I had this same problem when I upgraded my systems and used the 2 x 512
sticks of SDRAM. I thought the syestem was defective and spent a couple of
days talking with the suppliers with not a solutions. I did remove one
stick and everything worked perfectly. Somehow the system would not boot
with the one stick. Nothing seems wrong with the memory in 98, in fact it
is running fine in my daughters computer. I assumed it would not work with
1 gig memory, but like you I upgraded to DDR 2 x 512 and it works fine. I
sometime think that when 2 sticks are installed that they can be mismatched
in density or timing. Have no real clue, but have you tried removing to 1
bank at a time and switching chips and see if it will work.

GO here:
http://www.memtest86.com/
Get the memory checker, put it on a floppy, then boot from that floppy to
test your memory system.
