I have two differnet usb 2.0 ad on cards, without the
drivers for the cards installed, it tells me that I have
plugged a highspeed device into a non high speed port.
When I install the drivers for the card, it acts as if
there is nothing plugged into the port...

Any help on this would be great!!!!!!

Thanks,
Ziggy

Have you downloaded and installed SP1?

You should have bought the $80 combo card with IEEE 1394 and
USB 2.0, the best of both in one slot.

Have extensive, if somewhat bizarre experience with USB2 in XP Home.. I will
tell you what i have discovered up until about an hour ago..
I have an external USB2 40gig HD in an USB2.0 enclosure.. It has worked, but
not at the advertised speed of USB2.... I have several peripheral devices
(compact flash deveices) also.. I have SP1 installed which should take care
of the USB2 situation according to everything i have been told..
You really should not have to install anything extra, drivers that came with
the USB 2 hardware or anything really.. According to Microsoft, all that is
taken care of by XP which does, usually provide all the necessary stuff.

The USB2. PCI card i bought was cheap, cheaper than stuff at CompUSA
is what i mean.. The chip on the card is VIA, which oughta be o.k. right?...
Well after trying everything, and everyones patience on this newsgroup, i
gave-up and decided to use the HD etc at the slower speed....Because i was
getting the messages you are getting about a 'high speed device being
connected to a non USB2 port'............ Something was causing the PCI card
ports to not be recognized as USB2 and i did not understand at all...(still
dont really)

Today, just for the hell of it, I bought ANOTHER USB2 PCI card for (ouch)
$39 ... Belkin manufacturers it.. I did NOT install anything that came on
the Install CD, i let XP detect the PCI card and hopefully provide the
drivers...XP did its' thing and popped-up all the necessary stuff , PLUS NEC
chipset drivers which is the chip on the card. (different than the other
card remember?)....I was astounded!
The USB HD now runs at better than 10mb/s and the peripherals do not
cause the popup message to appear, which all means that the first card i had
probably was the culprit; that or the VIA chipset/drivers etc... I have
rebooted several times and the 'enhanced port' is holding, and all devices
are working well... The reason i am going on a length with this explanation
is have seen many posts about USB2 problems and with all the Help i got, i
should post my results.. I hope this answers some questions... I seem to
remember that in Microsoft Knowledge base they mention the NEC as being
compliant with Windows.. SO hopefully mine will continue to work 'as
advertised'....

After i wrote all that, i got back to the Newsgroup to find Ziggy had
already figured it out!...It must have been the 'cheapo' card for certain,
huh?...............I am kinda flipped-out that we all got something outta
this, i have been messing with this for more than a week! Thanks to all...

QUALITY
Quality is like buying oats.
If you want nice, clean fresh oats,
You must expect to pay a fair price.
But if you can be satisfied with oats that have been through
the horse,
They are a little bit cheaper

The 'homely' is cute and the point taken, but, to paraphrase Robert Pirsig,
How can one know what Quality is.....
Or better, how do you define quality?......To carry your metaphor; even a
city boy like me knows the difference betweeen 'oats' and horse ****!...
But PC Stuff????..
After all VIA chipsets are quality... LiteOn CD-RW drives are 'cheap' price
wise and very popular (although i seriously doubt their quality) and yet
they don't 'look' much different than a Plextor on the outside.. Can you
tell quality by any of that, (?) if you hafta buy stuff and have it fail to
find its' lack of quality, that is scary isn't it.. and i learned that with
this cheapo PCI USB card. But How could i know??
Paying more (whatever that means) doesn't necessarily get you
quality...Paying more than..........what? I paid $179 for a Plextor CD-RW
awhile ago 40x then was the top speed... It was noisy (the tray mechanism)
and flakey at times.. Yet, Plextor is 'known' for
'quality'................not sure i got what i payed for, so i bought 2 LG
Burners..Sold the Plex..

I don't hear much about GCE LG burners and many people who know less than I
have never heard of them and would rather buy a 'name brand', yet Goldstar
has been making burners for lottsa oems for years and they are excellent
hardware (I have 2) now...52x and 48x
No criticism of you here Mr. Macklin, just my philosophical
folderol....( folderol isn't usually 'quality' either)
Thanks for everybodies help, this was a pain...
