OKAY!!! Finally, sucess...YAHOO
Some details... I bought the drive at Best Buy. It was either a Digital
Research or an IO Magic 52x42x52x drive (I can't remember for sure).
It showed up as a generic "ATAPI CD-RW 52x24" under Device Manger.
Using Regedit...
Under...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE\
.... the drive was listed as "CdRomATAPI_CR-RW_52x24___________K.FC____"
I went to the support page on the IO Magic website...
http://www.iomagic.com/TechSupport/index.asp
and selected category = CD-Rewritable Drives and...
product = 52x24x52 Internal CD-Rewritable Drive
clicked search...
clicked drivers on the upper right of the new page...
and found a FIRMWARE UPGRADE... here is the description
"This firmware is only compatible with the firmware format k.(x)c where x is
your old firmware letter. It will not run if firmware versions do not match
the drive. "
I downloaded the upgradge and installed it (select the ATAPI choice in the
menu).
Now everything works great.
I hope this helps some other people!!!
