View Full Version : Wrong Hard Drive Disk Space

A few weeks ago I purchased a new western digital 120 GB
hard drive and a copy of Windows XP home edition
upgrade. My current hard drive that came with my Compaq
computer was going bad. My Compaq came preloaded with
Windows 98 but Compaq only supplied me with a "restore
CD" rather than the original Windows OS CD. I could not
load XP unless there was a previous version of windows on
the new hard drive, so I copied as much of my old hard
drive onto the new hard drive before it froze up. I then
installed the restoration disk and corrected any problems
from the incomplete transfer from the old hard drive. I
then loaded Windows XP.

So here is my problem (I have contacted Western digital
and my computer manufacture regarding this and have not
been able to resolve my problem.) Windows XP does not
recognize the full capacity of the new hard drive it only
shows 18.6 GB total space when I check the properties of
the C drive vs 120 GB of what it should be. In addition
my CD read/writer is no longer recognized as a writer and
I can only use it as a regular CD player.

any suggestions?

Michael;
What does BIOS show?
What does Disk Management show:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3ben-us%3b309000
Does the Compaq Restore CD restore the original partitions leaving the
rest as unused?
That would be about right for a 20 gb hard drive.

Double-check cabling and jumpers.

Michael,

I'm having the same problem. Instead I've installed a
80GB WD HD and only 32 GB are showing up.

Both BIOS and Disk Managment show 32 GB.
My jumpers shunts are on 1,2 and 5,6. I have a 200GB
slave installed(showing up fine).

I've updated my BIOS( intel D850EMV2 ).

PartitionMagic 8.0 is only seeing 32GB too.

Any help would be great.

TIA,
Angelo

Angelo;
Check the motherboard manufacturer.
What is the largest hard drive supported by that motherboard?
