View Full Version : Blue screen during boot when Maxtor external drive connected

WinXP: installed Maxtor 5000DV 200GB & lastest signed
drivers. Works fine IF you leave USB unplugged until
after Windows has loaded. However, if you try to boot
with the drive connected through USB, get a blue screen
with announcement that there is a hardware driver
problem. Screen disappears so fast I can't get all the
info. (Any way to capture the blue screens?)

Current strategy is to keep unplugging the USB cable when
I shut down, and plugging it back in, after I have
rebooted the system.

Oh, and by the way, problem ISN'T seen in SAFE Mode.

1) Safe Mode won't allow it to happen, because Safe Mode doesn't even try to
load the drivers, and ignores the other extras you've installed.

2) I checked
http://www.maxtor.com/en/documentation/installation_guides/personal_storage_5000_installation_guide.pdf
And found an interesting clue on page 25 (pg. 21 on the manual, but it shows
as pg 25 in Adobe)... Have you used the 'Unplug/Eject' icon BEFORE shutting
down? It might allow you to gracefully avoid the problem.

3) Otherwise, try searching their Knowledge Base.... It seems pretty
helpful....
