View Full Version : File deleted but space still taken
David
December 7th 03, 01:50 AM
Hi, I created a file that ended up being 5 gigs and when
i attempted to delete it the file dissapeared off my
system, but the space was still allocated to the file.
I've run scandisk and the 5 gig's the file took up are
still taken. This file was on my data partition of my
hard drive (not where windows is located) and i've
searched for the file along with disk cleanup and it
still isn't giving me the 5 gig's back...i tried the same
thing on another system, and the same error occured, the
1st system was with windows xp pro, and the 2nd one was
with windows xp home....if anyone's got any ideas, please
let me know....i wanna reclaim my space!!

Empty the recycle bin! The file is still there, (but saved), until you do
this!

First double check the recycle bin to see if it is still displayed there.
If it is not, you can go to a DOS prompt (click Start -->run, and type in
cmd). Go to the drive/directory the file is/was on, and type this:
"attrib -r -h -a NAMEOFFILE"
(without the quotes, and substituting NAMEOFFILE with the name of the file)
and hit enter. This will "unprotect" the file.
When it comes back to the prompt, type this:
"del NAMEOFFILE"
(again, without the quotes, and substituting NAMEOFFILE with the name of the
file)
That should delete it once and for all if it is actually there. Depending
on what you created the file with though, if it created a virtual drive or
some such, this may not work for you.
Hope this helps.

the recycle bin's been emptied about 20 times since
i "deleted" the file, so i know it's not in there

well i know the file's not in the recycle bin, and the
directory that the file was in was deleted as well...but
i know the file's somehow still there because i went from
over 5 gig's of free space to 720 meg's of free
space...and i know that the space is still taken b/c i
added up (roughly) the amount of space the other files
were taking up and seeing that (roughly) 5 gig's were
unaccounted for

Time to run chkdsk with the /F option on the partition in question! Free up
the allocated space in the file table.

David;
My guess would be turn Off/On system Restore.
Right click My Computer, click Properties.
Click System Restore tab.
Check "Turn off System Restore", click OK, follow prompts and reboot.
This deletes all Restore Points including corruption.
Then go back and turn on system Restore and create a Restore Point.

what good would deleting all the system restore points
do? i don't think it would change the fact that some of
my space isn't allocated properly

David;
I have seen this exact issue before.
Files like that are not tracked by System Restore, although the space
they take sometimes is held until system Restore is turned Off/On.
