updates - safe?

My computer just prompted me to download the two latest updates for windows
XP. I'm a bit leary of them. Are they safe?

FWIW since the 811493 fiasco I've decided to use the "remind me later"
function on updates, set it to 7 days, watch the Newsgroups and if in 7 days
reports are positive or there are no serious negative reports then I'll
install it. This of course has the affect of leaving you open to whatever
exploit the update may have covered but I was "open" to it before the update
arrived so, six of one half dozen of the other, IMHO.
