Hi
I don't know if you would call this a hardware problem
but can you please help me out
I have recently bought this PC which has XP home
preinstalled on it. I was previously running win98v2 on
my old PC. I am having trouble openning pictures that I
have downloaded / copied from the Internet. I had no
problems doing with the 98 version.
I am saving the pictures as bmp or jpeg, whichever they
are coming up with. When I want to look at them at a
later date they cannot be opened. The message is that
windows needs to know what program that created the file.
It offers to look on the interent , but cannot find a
FILext. There is also an offer to choose a program within
the pC to open the picture. I have transferred a program
from my previous PC but now this programme will not open
the picture, whereas it would do previously on 98
I have tried other help and have stopped the compression
of the files in AOL but this does not work either.
On my old PC I have loads of pictures to transfer but do
not want to do so until I'm sure I can view them
satifsactorily.
I have tried saving the files both to a folder in my
documents and to my pictures. I can not get them to show
up on my pictures at all
Please can anyone let me know a resolution to this
problem. If it can't be resolved then there was no point
in updating my PC at all
Tahnk you in anticipation
Michelle

If you are saving pictures by right clicking on the picture
and selecting "save picture as" the picture will be saved as
a jpg or bmp (what ever format it is) but if the picture was
part of a program window and you saved the picture as part
of the page in which it was embedded then it might change
the extension.
Besides Windows XP Home operating system, what other
software do you have on the computer? Do you have any
special graphic/photo programs such as PaintShop or
PhotoShop?

What did you have on the Windows 98se machine?

If you are saving pictures from a copyrighted website, they
may have encrypted them and that could be the problem also.

Can you save pictures from more general web sites, such as
Google or Yahoo?
