View Full Version : Removing Tasks that Start at Boot

I have 3 tasks that come up running when I boot the computer. All of them
deal with the CD. I don't want them to start at boot. How do I remove them
from the boot sequence?

Check the programs themselves for an option to load at startup. If you
can't find it there, click Start, Run and enter MSCONFIG Go to the Startup
tab and uncheck the items there. If they're not listed in Startup, check
Services.

How do you know they're loading at boot? Perhaps you mean they're loading
as Startup items once Windows loads. If the latter: go to run dialog, type
'msconfig', select 'selective startup', go to the apps tab, and deselect
whatever apps you don't want loading.

Whenever I want to delete the application on the All Progarms\ Startup tab,
all I did was rigtht click it then click Delete; and its gone when I look in
from msconfig. Even the item is gone in the Startup in the System
Configuration Utility - the General tab also shows Normal Startup. This is
better than unchecking the item in System Config Utitlity \ Startup which
will make the General tab show Selective startup and a Windows warning that
you are on Selective Startup...blah, blah.

Hope I'm doing it right. If deleteing the item in All Programs\ Startup is a
risky act, please warn me someone.

Mike.

You're fine, Michael. Deleting the shortcut did not delete the program. It
just changed when/how the program will be started. If you ever want the
program loading at startup again, create a new shortcut for the program and
drop it into the All Programs\Startup folder.

Shortcuts in the startup folder are just one of several ways that a program
can be launched at startup. Program settings that are recorded in the RUN
keys of the registry are another. Once in a while you hit a stubborn program
and will find an entry in the RUN keys that does not have a corresponding
menu setting.

While I prefer to keep a "normal startup" status in MSCONFIG too, there are
some folks that prefer to toggle a program on/off here instead of digging
around in menus. As long as the program is well behaved and doesn't add
itself back to MSCONFIG, it is a reasonable way to manage a program.

Thanks Sharon F; I'm now assured that I not not mess up with the registry.

I meant that I "did" not mess up my registry.
