Hi Loran1,
if your new hard is not formatted and/or
partitioned,chances are you will have to get a full
version of win xp. You can continue to try the upgrade
version,but very soon you'll come across it's limitations.

You do not need to buy a full version. Your upgrade can do everything you
need. It will do a clean install provided you have a copy of a qualifying
Windows version (95,98,ME). After you install your new hard drive, boot from
your XP CD and partition, format and install XP. Setup will prompt you to
insert your qualifying disk. The only limitation that an Upgrade has is that
you either have to have a qualifying version of Windows installed or have
the disk. That is the only difference.
