no sound

i connected a microphone to my computer so that i could
talk to people over the net but i lost the sound in my
speakers. they can hear me perfectly but i can not hear
them or even sound from music although it appears to be
playing. i have been through all of the appropriate tests
on microsoft help and everything seems to be ok.
could someone please help
i do not know what to try next

You checked the volume level, and whether the MUTE box had been checked?
Double-click on the speaker (in the notification area of the taskbar).
