Cd-r read problem

Please can someone shed some light.my Samsung 308b cdr/dv
combi drive has been very unreliable. It takes an age to
recognise a disk is present, usually spinning and
flashing for a moment before stopping.I cant seem to back
up files onto cd, and on prolonged disk activity, like
installs its prone for errors.
My best guess is its an overheating problem, because it
seems better when i boot up for the first time in the
morning, but may be way of the mark.
One last note it seems worse with some disks than with
others.
I would be very gratefull for any help as I've very
little computer knowledge.

Try cleaning it. There are CD drive cleaners, which look like
CDs with brushes sticking through the CD, at many stores.
