WHAT is hot? The 'modem'? How hot?

If you are speaking of the external modem, no this is not normal. While the
modem may become warm during use, I would not describe it as "very" hot.

What's hot? The modem itself?

How hot. If it's just warm to the touch that shouldn't be a problem.
If you're roasting marshmallows over it, then you should be concerned.
