external dvdrw

im trying to run an external dvdrw with my advent
laptop7012 with all the updates recommended by ms
but it will not install and run on windows xp home.
But the same dvdrw installs and runs on my other laptop
(tiny)with no problems at all,this laptop has no updates
at all, any help pleaboth laptops run windows xp home ed.

bios,s are factory settings, and firewire port works with
my cdrw.
