View Full Version : A New Problem Found with XP SP1 + P4 HT - read KB #815227

I just saw this posted in a tech forum:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;815227
SYMPTOMS
A program that uses large mapped file views to share information between two
processes may experience a significant performance decrease. The performance
degradation occurs in the UnmapViewOfFile function.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if you install Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) on an
Intel Pentium 4 computer that has more than one logical processor.
RESOLUTION
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to
correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to
computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive
additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this
problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service
pack that contains this fix.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------
Whjy do we need to contact Microsoft itself for the fix? There is no
solution posted anywhere.
Anyone with ideas how to implement it?

I believe the answer to your question is contained in your own post.
"it is only intended to
correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to
computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive
additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this
problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service
pack that contains this fix."
If you aren't *severely* affected wait for the fully tested release.

You forgot the rest of the article that tells you what to do if you wish to
use the fix now:
To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support
Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support
Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the
following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;CNTACTMS
NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support
calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a
specific update will resolve your problem. The typical support costs will
apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the
specific update in question.
