Rename My Computer, My Network Places, etc

I recently applied the most recent critical patches on my WinXP machine. Since then I have not been able to rename the My Computer, My Network Places and My Documents icons on my desktop. I'm really tired of the My, My, My names, so in the past I renamed t
hem simply to Computer, Network and Documents. Since this patch I can rename them, but as soon as I restart the computer the names revert.

The fix is:

Start -> Run -> Regedit

Navigate to:
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\Clsid"
(HKCU =3D HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT)

Right-click the folder icon for this key & select 'Permissions'

Click 'Advanced' -> click 'Add' -> type "System" -> click 'OK'

Put a check in the 'Deny' column for the 'Set Value' permission.

'OK' your way out.

My custom icons are staying put & I haven't seen any adverse effects.

Although this technique worked for me, the bottom line is that it really shouldn't be such a pain to rename the desktop icons. You should be able to right-click, select rename and go from there. (In fact you can do that, but it reverts next time your resta
