View Full Version : Reinstallation of Internet Explorer 6

I downloaded IE6 setup from the MICROSOFT Website and went
through the reinstallation procedures in Microsoft
Knowledge Base Article 318378: How to Reinstall or Repair
Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP.

Here's what I got (5 tries):

"The software you are installing has not passed Windows
testing to verify it's compatibility with Windows XP. This
software will not be installed."

This is the worst doubletalk I've ever gotten from
Microsoft.

When I rebooted, I was told IE6 had been removed, yet here
I am writing a message on the Internet using what calls
itself IE6. The browser is still busted, and Windows
Update says there are no updates to apply.

Can anybody explain this?

John;
Follow this:

Look for:
"When installing an update you receive the following message:
"Software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing""
Reboot before trying each suggestion on the link.

Sorry, Jupitor, I could get no help from the fixes. I
don't have a 2nd
machine, so I couldn't try #4.

Here are some things you might find interesting:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From MSInfo:
iecontlc.dll <File Missing>
iecont.dll <File Missing>
ieuinit.inf <Not Available> (Whatever that means).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Downloaded Program Files:
Java Runtime Environment 1.3.1_08 Damaged
(This has recurred several times following new Java
downloads).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The mouse is extremely erratic, and eventually Windows
will freeze up.
Problem is: I get no error messages.
I'm losing my cable connection quite often -- it was
always very stable.
I've checked for viruses, trojans, spyware, etc, till I'm
blue -- haven't
found anything at all. I don't think anything has control
over the mouse or
browser.
By the way, Browsertune kicked it out on the first test --
said to replace
it . . . if only I could!
I don't show any problem devices and the freezes are not
occurring with
respect to any specific software.
The machine isn't hot, and I don't detect any strange
noises.
Any mouse I use works in the same erratic fashion.
Sorry to hit you with all of this, but I'm very limited in
expertise. Thanks for helping.
John
John;
Go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and download their
hard drive diagnostics.
Open case, reseat all cards and cables.
Start/Run
Type "cmd" ENTER
Type "sfc /scannow" ENTER
Have Windows XP CD available, this will check for corrupted system
files
I'm having a hard time finding out anything about my hard
drive. I do know that it is a Samsung SV4012H. However, on
the Samsung Website my model is nowhere to be found. I've
only had the computer for 6 months, but apparently it is
obsolete in their eyes. They have some pretty good-looking
utilities, but as you might have guessed, my model is not
compatible with even one current utility. I have a message
pending with Samsung Support asking for an older version
of the utilities that would be compatible with my drive.
I did a chkdsk and, as usual, it zoomed through the
information at the end and told me absolutely nothing
about the condition of my drive. Is there a log file
somewhere for that data?
I also did a defrag and got this:
-------------------------------------------------------
Volume Local Disk (C:)
Volume size = 37.26 GB
Cluster size = 4 KB
Used space = 10.16 GB
Free space = 27.10 GB
Percent free space = 72 %
Volume fragmentation
Total fragmentation = 0 %
File fragmentation = 0 %
Free space fragmentation = 0 %
File fragmentation
Total files = 39,649
Average file size = 318 KB
Total fragmented files = 0
Total excess fragments = 0
Average fragments per file = 0.99
Pagefile fragmentation
Pagefile size = 192 MB
Total fragments = 1
Folder fragmentation
Total folders = 2,457
Fragmented folders = 1
Excess folder fragments = 0
Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation
Total MFT size = 64 MB
MFT record count = 42,294
Percent MFT in use = 64 %
Total MFT fragments = 8
Fragments File Size Files that cannot be
defragmented
None
-------------------------------------------------------
I know this isn't nearly what you need to see, but at
least you can use it for whatever it's worth.
I discovered that the system is not freezing; only the
mouse is sticking (i.e., why I get no error messages). I
can use the arrows to move about, and I can shut down
properly, and save data in the open program, but I don't
know how to close the open apps, etc. Is there a keyboard
shortcut that provides for the closing of open programs
before shutting down? I've found an updated driver for the
Intellipoint 3.2 mouse (v4.0). The erratic behavior isn't
much different, but it freezes at a lower frequency so
far.
Since the defrag (it had only been a week since I had run
it) the computer suddenly starts and shuts down quite
well. Overall speed is pretty fair for XP, but Outlook and
Internet Explorer are very slow.
This computer unbelievably has only a 250 watt power
supply for a 2GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, and a 40GB hard
drive; could that possibly be causing the problem?
Could the busted browser and erratic mouse be the result
of spyware that might not have been deleted properly?
I apologize for the long post . . . just wanted you to
have all the information possible.
John
John;
From what you describe, it is probably not the hard drive.
Power off, reseat mouse connector checking for damage at plug.
Try a different mouse.
Many motherboards connections for mouse and keyboard are
interchangeable, try swapping after checking manufacturer/manual.
