Adding a port

I need to have port 1 & 3 for my palm hot Sync to work.
When I reinstalled XP it eliminated the 3 port in device
manager. How do I add the 3 port back in. Device
manager only show ports 1, 2 & 4

If Device Manager sees ports 1,2, & 4 correctly, then I would bet that your
motherboard BIOS has COM 3 turned off. It is possible that the port itself
could be faulty on the motherboard.

You can also check the System Information application (also called WINMSD)
to see if there is any information about the port. Click START > RUN >
type "msinfo32" (or "winmsd") and hit [ENTER]. Within the System
Information application, go to COMPONENTS > PORTS and look for port
details. Also check out COMPONENTS > PROBLEM DEVICES just in case the port
is having a problem but not showing up in Device Manager for some reason.

How many com ports do you have? Most motherboards have 2, some have only
1...unless you've added a pci serial card with one or more extra ports.

You can add com port numbers to your heart's content, but if you don't have
the physical ports, the numbers will do you no good.
