I have tried using two different memory sticks, both 512
MG, and with both of them, when I bring up the property
sheet on the system it only shows 480MG. Can anyone tell
me why? Thanks in advance for any help.

sound like mabey 1 may be bad. Have you tried each one at a time to make
sure they work individually. Sometimes 2 chips can work individually and
not always together. Could a timing problem or density difference. Happens
more often than you would think. Did you buy them at the same place and
time? Possible to try them in another machine.

Either the two sticks of ram are incompatible with each other, or one of
your memory slots is bad.
