View Full Version : Hot Fixes

I was trying to browse the web and all of a sudden
everything began to slow down. It slowed down so much that
I was receiving virtual memory warnings and I looked in a
system resources program and was told there was a 95% load
on the system, which was impossible, normally. Then the
system said it was repairing the problem. Now I have about
15-20 "Hot Fix" references in my add/remove programs list
and when I click to remove, it says that the fixes will be
removed if I uninstall them. Is this true or can I just
remove them? Does anyone know why this could have
happened? I am now in the process of identifying and
removing startup items to free up the system. There is a
lot of extraneous stuff, but it doesn't seem to be enough
to cause this incident (this never happened in Win98).

Hi Steve,
If you uninstall a hotfix, the update is removed from your system. If =
you delete the hotfix uninstall folder in the \windows directory, you =
can no longer uninstall the associated hotfix.
If you find Q811493 listed among these, I would suggest that you =
uninstall it. Then revisit Windows Update and reinstall the updated =
version just released that does not cause the slowdown problem.

Hi Steve,
Some of the Hotfixes (Mostly security updates) do not have an uninstall
feature, these will not appear in the Add and Remove list. If a Hotfix does
appear in the Add and Remove list then it can be uninstalled just like any
other program.
If you uninstall the Hotfix, you will lose the benefits of that patch. This
should only be done if you can determine that you are experiencing negative
effects from the particular Hotfix.
If you simply do not want them to appear in the Add and Remove list and you
are sure that you will not need the uninstall option, you can remove items
from that list by using a registry tweak.

Manual Edit: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key"
HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Uninstall
Expand this branch and look at the list. The Hotfixes are all listed by a
"Q" number that corresponds to the entry in the Add and Remove list. Make
sure that you back up each Key before deleting it.
Select the key and then select File/Export and include the Q number in the
name of the file. Right click the entries you want to remove and select
Delete.
