I have upgraded from windows 98se to XP Pro and can no
longer readmy old 5.25" floppy disks of which I have many
many from the 80's.

When trying to read these disks I get "disk unformatted"
or "unrecognized file system" message.

I can boot the machine with a windows 98 startup disk and
these disks, but I would like the convenience of accessing
these disks in XP.

Thank you for any help.

I am not sure but someone told me that xp does not have a driver for those
old floppy drives, another time I posted that here and someone said I was
saying nonsense. Why dont you transfer the data from all those disks while
running win98, to your hard disk or new floppies? There is a program that
can make IMAGES of your floopies EXACTLY like they are. You can install it,
make the images and transfer them all to a cd if you have a cd write or your
hard disk.

the program is shareware and can be used for a long time before registering.

For the ones reading technical replies, I would kindly request them to give
me their feedback with another post (in the same thread of course), so I
will know if my advice helped them or not.

XP only supports the 3-1/2" disks and doesn't even format
720 kb.
Your best course would be to boot with your W98 and copy the
360 kb disks to 1.44 or is you have a FAT32 partition, to
your hard drive.

Not true at all! XP will handle 720KB 3.5" and 360KB and 1.2MB 5.25"
diskettes with no problems. To format them, you have to specify the tracks
and sectors on the command line. You also have to make sure the density of
the diskette is correct for the format you're trying to use. 3.5" 720KB
diskettes have only one rectangular hole in them, used for the sliding
write-protect tab. 1.44MB (HD) diskettes have two holes, one for the tab
and one to identify the diskette to the computer. 360KB 5.25" floppies have
a hub reinforcement ring and 1.2MB diskettes don't have that ring.

This is the Knowledge Base article on Windows XP floppy drive
support:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;309623

If you turn on floppy drive seek in the BIOS, you might have better
luck reading the disk while in Windows XP. Since the heads actually
make contact with the surface of floppy disk, it would be wise to
transfer them to another medium as soon as they can be read. The
slots in the 5.25 inch drives are dust bunny magnets, so make sure
the drive are clean. Much of the air is drawn in through that
opening.

Why not just copy them to a cdrom and put each in a directory? Or at the
very least copy them to HD floppy. At first I thought you were another
joker trying to pull everyone leg. Com on I bet you still have 8 track
tapes.
