I had an origional operating system of Windows ME on my
machine and the fan ran all of the time... Currently I
upgraded to Windows XP Professional <not clean install but
upgrade> and my Laptop fan only runs during boot up.. why
will it not run anymore? Laptop is overheating.

Check vendors website for drivers for your laptops power management.
