View Full Version : Stop Error not listed on Jim's Pages (C0000218)

I am /still/ continuing the long and laborious process of troubleshooting my
'main' system. Could someone please tell me what the following
means/pertains to, as I cannot find anything even remotely similar in Jim's
stop error catalogue.

C0000218 Registry File Failure
The registry cannot load file hive (file)
\systemroot\system32\config\SECURITY
or its log or alternate
It is corrupt, absent or not writable

It then does the usual memory dump.

There is nothing unusual on the hard drive - just a clean vanilla Pro
installation (the drive is NTFS formatted, and was reformatted prior to
Windows installation).

I guess that XP and 2000 share the same error codes, but the only error
ending in 18 pertains to a SB Live, but my error doesn't begin with the
usual 0x, but C0000 - and I don't have a SB Live.

Any, and all, assistance gratefully received - I'm at my wits end with this.

Hi, Cassandra.

This is the first of 6 hits Google got on "c00000218":
http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/49850.html

Does that solution work for you?

By the way, who is Jim?

(I've trimmed m.p.w.help_and_support from your crosspost, since your problem
has nothing to do with the Help file.)

Since you say it is a fresh instance of XP on the drive, this indicates =
either a hard drive error, or it had trouble writing the registry while =
loading it into the memory because of a faulty driver, causing a parity =
error(s). Try running chkdsk in the RC, or "a repait install". Maybe a =
driver didn't load properly from the install. Hope your XP disk didn't =
go bad.

Thanks for replying Ted, but I'm praying that it isn't the drive as it's
only six months old (fortunately it has a 3-year warranty, unfortunately I
purchased it from a company that - I found out later - don't give a flying
f*** about customer service and satisfaction. I had to RMA a CPU once
(because they'd sent me a faulty one to begin with - three bent pins and the
original customer's invoice stuck to the die! The CSR I spoke to call me a
"f**king liar" - yes that's a direct quote - and said I'd damaged the chip
because I'd decided I didn't want it and was trying to avoid their 20%
restocking fee! I had to threaten legal action to get a full refund).

Thanks for replying, Nicholas, I found that article after I'd posted.
However, I'm having a little trouble (maybe you can help me here too). If
you look about halfway down, there is a section about accessing the SVI
folder - accessing it isn't a problem, however, because this is a clean
installation, I have none of the files that the article talks about because
I've yet to create any restore points. I have no Snapshot folder, just one
folder with the unintelligibly long name and RP0 (obviously because I've
created no points). This folder does NOT contain any registry information
(_REGISTRY_USER.DEFAULT, _REGISTRY_USER>SECURITY and so forth). As I don't
have these files, I cannot proceed with the repair. I do, however, have
access to another Pro system (albeit one running the Media Centre flavour),
I was wondering can I copy the files across from that (somehow) though,
having thought about it, that wouldn't work would it because obviously they
would pertain to applications the other system doesn't have installed.

Can you tell me how I go about continuing with the reparation?

Thanks

Cass
