View Full Version : Changing Hardware

I have a PIII 1-GHz machine with 512 ram running XP home
edition... Not the fastests of hardware/OS
configurations, so I decided to invest in some new
hardware.
I purchased a new ASUS motherboard and XP 2500 processor
combo with 1 gig of ram... After spending some time
swapping out the hardware, I was ready for the impressive
moment of electronic speed... i got anything but...
What I got was a blue screen of death upon boot saying
that it suspected a virus and halted the system to
protect things... Not to be detered, I setup the old
motherboard, cpu and memory on the table with an old
power supply... connected the same harddrive that had
just given me the error and booted. I chose the 'boot
normal' option when it came up and waa-laa... everything
fine... So, I uninstalled the virus software...
I hooked the harddrive back to the new hardware and got
the same thing... blue screen saying it had a problem and
was halting.
I suspected that XP was hooked into the hardware, but I
didn't think it was that tight. I have a valid ownership
key but have yet to find a place to tell XP to work with
the new hardware. I do not want to loose all my settings
by having to install the OS again.
Does anyone know how to upgrade hardware with an XP
operating system? Is there special things I have to do? I
can't find anything on the subject... I'm sure Microsoft
is just trying to control piracy, but I would hate to
think they would suppress hardware upgrades because of
such...
Any help greatly appreciated.... Scotty

Whne changing motherboards (and therefore chipsets) it is always advisiable
to do a Repair Installation of XP to ensure all the hardware changes are
correctly identified.
Boot with the XP CD. Ignore the F2 for the Recovery Console... go thru the
F8 and accept the EULA. Windows will look for (and find itself) on the hard
drive. It will then offer a Repair Installation.

Your new motherboard did not exist when you initially installed
Windows XP....... there are no drivers installed for it.
Visit http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm and click
on "How to Run a Repair Install".
You'll need your original Windows XP CD, and the Product Key that
came with it, in order to perform a repair.
Afterward, you'll activate XP in the same manner as you did originally.
If activation is unsuccessful, use the "activate by telephone" option.
