Hi,

Can anyone tell me why an external drive on an IEEE 1394
connection would not fail to start in XP Pro? The drive
has a 6-pin connector and works fine with my desktop,
However, when I connect it to my laptop using the
required 6-to-4 pin cable, the drive appears in Device
Manager with an sxclamation mark in a yellow circle. The
comment window in the device's properties say "This
device cannot start (Code 10)." I've tried reinstalling
it, restarting, you name it. Even found a supposedfix on
the KB site, ut hat did nothing to fix the problem.

Any ideas?

The 4 pin cable doers not supply power to the firewire device whereas the 6
pin cable does. You will need to provide an "external" power supply to the
drive. I power mine from a USB Port.
