I am having a problem where XP does not install the driver
automatically for a device I plug into the USB port.
For example, I have a Microsoft Optical wheel mouse. When
I plugged it into the USB port for the first time, the
computer recognised the device with the familiar chime.
But I didn't get a message from the System Tray saying
that the mouse is now installed, and the mouse didn't work.
I went to the control panel to start the Add Hardware
wizard, and it said that a Hardware install was in
progress. So I waited for 30 mins, but still the mouse was
not installed.
I went to the device manager and saw the mouse listed with
a yellow question mark next to it. I went to properties,
and saw there was no driver installed for the mouse. I
then clicked "Reinstall Driver" and then XP found the
driver and installed it and the mouse is working.
This also happened for an external keypad I am using.
How can I get XP to recognise and install hardware and
drivers automatically?
Thanks in advance
