View Full Version : What's the right way to remove software that can't "uninstall" itself ?

For one reason or another I've got some software that shows up
in Control Panel/Add-Remove software that won't install itself.
In some cases I've already blown away the app's files in
/program files/.

What registry key controls what shows up in CP/Add-Remove ?

Are there any other registry locations I should check to clean up
from a broken uninstall ?

Is there a version of REGCLEAN for XP ?

FWIW I'm using XP/Pro here.

Thanks.

You should reinstall the programs, then go to the
Add/Remove Programs applet to uninstall them.
Removing just bits and pieces of a program will
corrupt the uninstall process.

What software is it? If it is spyware such as Gator or
Hotbar, SpyBot will get it all.

It's any software.

Micorsoft Office is a good example. If you don't have the
exact CD it was installed from you can't repair a broken Office
installation.

(I know about that anti-spyware tools already)
