My 2 year old Dell Dimension came equipped with Win 98 (1) and An ATI Expert
09D 2X AGP Graphics Card - Factory Installed. Six months ago, I switched
from Win 98 to Win XP. Too many problems to innumerate, but one that is
consistent. When I go to the control pannel and set power control to go
into stand-by mode, (usually 30 minutes) - I get a "bing" and a message
saying:
"The device driver for the ATI Technologies, Inc 3D Rage Pro AGP 2X'
device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all
applications and try again. If the problem persists you mauy need to update
this." This happens at the end of the elapsed time that I have set for the
computer to go into stand-by.
This same issue has caused many, many problems, and at one point, either a
Dell or a Microsoft technican (don't remember which) told me I had a bad
video card. The computer became inoperable, and a so called "expert," whose
expertise I question, took the computer into the shop, tore it down, and
told me it couldn't be fixed. I gathered up the pieces in a paper bag, took
it home, put it together and it worked fine.
I still get this message, however, unless I turn the stand-by off
completely. Previous experience has made me cautions about tampering with
the video card or driver. The CD driver supplied with my computer says "ATI
Software Release: 5.16H/5.22C80. I contains 4 folders: Named as follows:
1.DirectX5
2. Win98
4. Win 95
5. Ain NT
I am now using com_microsoft.DirectX_8_0_Update_4717
Any help would be appreciated.
