i like cd-mate www.cd-mate.com, though it has difficulty running under a
restricted user account. however it has all the features of other burning
apps, plus the ability to write raw mode data; and it has the best feature
of all - its a free download. its shareware.

I have a new laptop, with XP installed, and I have been using the Windows
Media Player, and burning CDs very easily.
On my other computer, Win 98SE, I have CopyCD (paid for) and it sucks.

I use Record Now Max for regular drag and drop burning but found that i
needed something else for burning iso and bin files. I bought FireBurner
for that and have had no problems. I chose Fireburner because it did not put
any propritary files on my computer that could conflict with other software.

Please don't say that all in one breath, Harry.
My son had EZ CD installed & the other day installed RecordNow Max to have a
look-see.
Who said XP was almost crashproof?
Afterwards, after opening EZ CD once, everything locks up, you can no longer
re-boot, & it even changes the BIOS.
OS 2 on Drive 2 no longer accessible, the (CD/RW) CDROM in BIOS suddenly
became "floptical" - whatever that is, SR doesn't have any effect on the
problem.
Well, MAX does say to uninstall EZ CD first!
Nero is definitely the pick (complete with a nice Wave Editor).

I use Nero for most things but discovered it will not work with CD+G Karaoke
and I had to get DiskJuggler for that. Seems to be an oversight on the part
of Ahead in what is otherwise in my opinion the best burning program. I
wouldn't use Easy CD Creator, especially if you have other burning software
installed. Also disable native XP recording if using 3rd party software. I
also installed Clone CD since my young daughter likes it, it's only for
making CD copies and very easy to use.

All three apps coincide nicely on my system. I also run CloneCD, and at
various times other CD Burning software.
ECDC can not change your BIOS settings.

Well, what do you think happened to change the BURNER drive in BIOS to
'foptical', Harry? (excuse the previous mis-spelling)
It seems strange that it affected the designation for that particular drive,
but left my DVD-ROM drive unchanged.
I'm sure the combination of problems was caused by Recordnow MAX, NOT EZ
CD - (which I had just upgraded to the latest - 5.3.5.10).
I later partially ran the MAX install again & it distinctly says something
like -
"We have detected you have EZ CD Creator installed, please uninstall it
first before continuing with this installation."
It looks like one great software conflict to me, but that BIOS bit has me
tossed.
I'm also running CloneCD & previously never had any troubles with CloneCD,
Nero 5.5.10.7 & EZ CD all being installed together.
I'm still sure the crash was initiated by my running EZ CD - but caused by
conflict or changes made to it by MAX, (it was the first time I had run it
since installing MAX).
Perhaps you're not having troubles because you have different versions?

John I have no idea what could have caused the BIOS setting to change. Did
you flash your CD Burner's firmware? The BIOS would identify the burner as
being a different drive I suppose if there was a bad flash. I find it
highly unlikely any of the software you mentioned would do that though.

No, Harry, I didn't.
I had a full (luckily only 3 days old) backup of XP on another drive,
formatted and imaged that back to C:, auto-detected the drives & everything
worked fine, so it was no firmware change.
Guess I had better just forget about it - but it is annoying when something
like that happens & you can't come to a definite conclusion.
Thanks for your help.
