Asus A7N8X m/b.
Bought a 6in1 card reader/writer, tells me it needs no drivers for XP. From
the manual:

"Windows ME, Windows XP
1.. Boot up computer .
2.. Connect the USB Flash Memory Card Reader to computer.
3.. The USB Flash Memory Card Reader will be recognized as four Removable
Disk icons in "MY COMPUTER".

I can't see icons for it anywhere in My Computer or Windows Explorer though
power LED on reader is on.
In Device Manager under USB I have:
1.Standard enhanced PCI to USB host controller.
2.Standard openHCD USB controller.
3.Standard openHCD USB controller.
4.Unknown device.
5.USB printing support
6.USB root hub.
7.USB root hub.
8.USB root hub.
No. 4, Unknown Device is I assume the reader since it goes away if I remove
USB plug. Have tried different USB sockets, no difference.
In the reader I have an empty Smart Media card formatted in a Fuji camera,
is it something to do with that? I was hoping to use this as a convenient
portable storage for all types of file, not just for photographs. Does it
not work like that? Very little info in the manual. BTW I don't have the
camera, only the card.

In general this works as advertised. I have a 6-in-1 card reader/writer from
Dazzle and it worked just fine as soon as I plugged it in.

usb 2.0 reader/writer trying to work on a usb1.0 or 1.1 usb port?

Also, the Unknown Device is an indication that software has to
be installed. Go to the mfr website to see if they have xp drivers.

There's some mention of firmware on the FAQ page. Certain versions for XP.
There is a download link on that page for the firmware update and an
installer tool as well.

Have since discovered it will work without the supplied extension cable so
it's either faulty cable or the USB port can't supply enough power for it to
work with longer cable. Certainly not practical to get down on my knees
under the table every time I want to use it. Printer & scanner have their
own PSU, no other USB device drawing power. Either way it's being returned
since it doesn't work as advertised. Maybe if I bought a powered hub it
still wouldn't work!

Interesting - I have exactly that card reader, and it works perfectly
with or without the extension cable - and even with printer, scanner and
mouse also attached to USB ports. haven't tried it connected to a hub,
though.
