View Full Version : RAID array

Having a problem getting XP to recognise my array setup
(RAID 0).
Installed an ASUS P4C800 motherboard, properly set up the
BIOS to read my 2 serial Raptor disks (box only has two
HDD's), used fdisk to format disks but when i get to the
XP Setup screen it cant find my drives.
Something else that's weird is that when the setup prompt
to install 3rd party drivers for RAID or SCSI drives
appears (for me it is an F6 prompt), the prompt doesn't
work - i can't stop the progress to install the ASUS raid
drivers (i even tried multiple keyboards)
Anyone have this problem before? Any ideas?
Thanks
Nicholas

Make sure to hit your "F Lock" key during setup in order
to use your "F" keys. =20

Hello
I have that same board and had a similar issue but what I did was
updated my Bios, and make sure that you copy the files from the
cdrom for the raid setup onto a floppy. Current mine is working
great with (2) 120WD raid 0

Hi Tom
With the Asus P4C800 the SATA and RAID are fully integrated into the ICH5R
chipset which may not need you to introduce the controllers once you have
set-up the RAID to begin with... this (the RAID array) needs to be done
before installing XP. During XP set-up you will have full ability to
partition and format the drives so fdisk should not be needed either.
Apart from BIOS update? default settings in BIOS? (with RAID and SATA boot
enabled if necessary), have you tried to let the installation simply run
through without pressing F6?
Hope some of that helps
Pete

Tom,
When install prompts you for 3rd party drivers nothing happens right then,
this is by design. Later on it will prompt to insert a floppy with the
drivers. You must use a floppy, it won't install from CD.

Thanks Alvin - i was planning on updating the BIOS tonight
(its my home comp) hoping that that was the cause -
hopefully this solves it.
Thanks for the suggestion.

You must have an USB keyboard, try a PS2 one to press F6

thanks Pete - i have tried skipping the F6 prompt but XP
fails to recognise the drives.
I too thought that fdisk wouldn't be needed but the
support material suggests that i use it after configuring
the raid in the bios (which went without a hitch).
on my first boot attempt, after setting up the BIOS with
raid, i went to the XP install (skipping fdisk) thinking
that XP would handle it for me - but it wouldn't find the
disks, so i went back and ran fdisk - to no avail.
hopefully the BIOS update works - it's my first raid setup
and i'm dying to get the new machine up and running.
thanks again

just to be sure i swapped it out for a ps2 when i hit the

run into the xp "can't recognise your drives" message, at

You do not have to install any 3rd party drivers

Tom
Once you get the XP set-up to recognise the SATA drives you won't need to
have used the fdisk first.
That said let's try and get those SATA drives recognised. Where did the
floppy disk you're using to introduce the SATA (or RAID?) drivers originate?
And what files are on it?
Check your BIOS settings against those recommended in the manual... It would
appear that your settings in IDE configuration should be the same as those
depicted in section 4.3.6 with the exception of "Yes" to Configure SATA as
RAID, followed by SerialATA BOOTROM enabled.
If the solution was a simple update to BIOS that would probably be specified
in the update section of the Asus website (not guaranteed I know)... the
fact that the SATA drives are simply not recognised is more likely to come
from either a BIOS setting or the incorrect introduction of drivers (or the
wrong drivers).
One more thing to check, system performance mode should be "Standard" until
everything is stable.
Hope some of that helps

OK Tom
So you have a P4C800 Deluxe... which does use the Promise controller and
therefore, in addition to the checks I mention in my other post, you need to
be installing the promise Fast-Track RAID driver version 1.0.0.23 available
from the website... it may be that the incorrect drivers have been copied to
the floppy disk.
That's a P4C800 *Deluxe* and *NOT* the P4C800 mainboard which was in your
initial post. It's a simple error but one uses the Promise controller and
the other uses the ICH5R chipset for SATA and RAID.
And as someone else said... well done for following up so quickly on so many
fronts.

the floppy has the Promise chip drivers that came with the
mobo cd (they are for the raid, not the serial) What i'm
trying to do is to activate the prompt for "raid or scsi
drivers" that appears in the xp install process by hitting
f6 at the prompt - which for some reason does not work.
your right, i should go back and review my bios settings
to make sure that i haven't missed anything in regards to
the serial setup. maybe this is causing my problem of not
being able to introduce the Promise raid drivers with the
F6 prompt when asked to do so during xp install.
i checked the Asus site and the bios update that i
downloaded doesn't mention anything about solving serial
or raid configuration in xp - but who knows.
thanks for the suggestions - i'll be spending my evening
eyeballing my settings :-)

Tom
I would download and put the Promise RAID drivers on the website onto a
floppy disk... just in case... Additionally don't start up with the floppy
already in the drive (don't know if that's what you're doing but worth
checking :o) ) Pressing the F6 won't produce an immediate result it'll take
a while to prepare and then it should ask for a floppy disk. If we can get
that far we may have it sussed.
Keep us all updated and good luck

Hi Tom,
Just a silly question...you ARE using the header for SATA RAID and not the
headers for straight SATA right? I own the same board, but am still using
parallel IDE and plan to try SATA RAID0 in the future.
Good luck,
Bob

Correction needed to info in above post.
Instead of "'Yes' to Configure SATA as RAID, followed by SerialATA BOOTROM
'enabled' "
The P4C800 Deluxe will need to be set as follows
In Advanced Menu / On-Board Devices / OnBoard promise Controller 'enabled'
and Operating mode set to 'RAID'
Another poster has also pointed out that there are 2 sets of SATA
connections... 1 for IDE and the other for RAID... worth checking as well.
Hope some of the info proves useful.

You may have to wait some (long) time before it actually asks for those
drivers, eg when pressing F6 it won't ask ou to inset _floppy_ with drivers
straigth away..

not a silly question at all - they are easily confused as
they are so close to one another - i am using the right
