Has anyone had a problem installing any updates? I have
clicked the install button on update Q817287 many times
on several different days. Yet when I turn my computer on
I get that old message "windows is ready to install the
recommended updates" I click "details" to find out what
I'm installing and then I click "install". Why wont this
update install like the many others I have had? System

The most popular cause of this failure is a corrupt 'catroot2' file.
Ironically 817287 is the update to prevent the corruption of 'catroot2'. To
fix: In C:/windows/system32 find the file 'catroot2' and rename it to
anything else such as catold2. Reboot, download and install. A new catroot2
file will be generated.

See this page for a fix

Errors Occur When You Try to Install Updates from the Windows Update Web
Site
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;817753

Afterwards, installing the Q817287: Critical Update (Catalog Database
Corruption in Microsoft Windows XP) fix will stop this above issue from
happening again

Rename the folder windows\system32\catroot2 and reboot. Then get -
only - Q817287 and install it; you should then be able to carry on
with other updates, and the problem will not recur
