Pardon the cross-post, but ...

Along with a couple other people, I've posted this question several times
over the past year or two but not seen a result. I've been looking for a way
through reg hack or group policy to pre-configure visual settings for all
users to the "Best Performance" setting. I don't want to do the wholesale
modification of Default User as there are undesirable consequences in XP
with that method.

There was a nice tip in the May 4 issue of PC Magazine (page 82- Configure
the Pre-Log-On Display) that takes a good stab at setting to best
performance for all users on the system. It takes care of all but 9 of the
user settings that regulate Windows visual effects settings. A little more
work in this area could yield a .reg file that would cover all the settings.
I will give it a shot, but, in case anyone else already has isolated the
registry keys for these, here are the things (in System Properties,
Advanced, Performance pane, Visual Effects tab, which are not covered by the
PC Mag tip:
---find the registry keys that control:
Animate Windows
Show window contents while dragging
Slide open combo boxes
Smooth edges of screen fonts
Smooth-scroll list boxes
Usa a background image for each folder
Use common tasks
Use visual styles on windows and buttons

cheers, Dave
