micrphone off?

Hi, i´ve got some problem with my microphone audio recognition.
It seems to me that my windows Xp in general doesn´t want to capture any
microphone signal....
it works fine in playback mode, (i hear the sound of my voice on the
speakers) in the mixer, but whenever I try to record or use such softwares
as GameVoice share or MSN (voice communication) I am not able to setup the
microfone....

I really aprecciate if you could help me cause this is troubling me for a
long time....

If you have a volume control in your tray, open it, go into properties,
make sure the microphone is checked in 'show following volume controls',
then when recording controls pops up, select the microphone.
