I installed an AOpen FM56-PM controllerless modem using
drivers supplied by AOpen under a Windows XP Home
operating system. I have installed and used Microsoft
Fax Console successfully (both sending and receiving
faxes). Now, however, when I attempt to you use a dial-
up e-mail service (old Juno), the program (Juno) "cannot
find any modem." "Device Manager - Modem" claims the
modem to be on COM 3; yet, "Device Manager - Ports" fails
to list any COM 3 port available. Juno's "modem setup" -
automatic or manual - refuses to detect any modem. The
implication here is that Microsoft Fax Console
has "locked up" use of the modem, blocking any other
program from use. Is it possible to force MFConsole
to "release" COM 3 for use by other programs? If so,
how?
