Black Ink doesn't print

Please could anyone tell me why the black ink on my printer doesn't print? the colour works fine, and this only started happening today, the black ink has worked fine previously. the printer doesn't indicate that the ink is running out so what on earth is
the problem? its an Epson Stylus Color 400 if you need to know

Open the printer lid and physically look at the cartridge. Does it still
have plenty of ink in it?
