The drive-letter issue sounds like one of the "automatic"
and supposedly helpful things that Microsoft just loves
to insert into updates of operating systems. Sorry,
can't help you there...

Regarding the "miniport" issue; I, too, have a "bridge" -
always "X"-ed - that XP Home insists upon notating
because I installed a Pinnacle PCI camcorder (firewire)
card. It isn't causing any problem, but it seems to
be "waiting for something" - perhaps, the first time I
actually plug a camcorder into the card?
