cd burning locks computer

Hi,

I'm running xp pro and whenever I burn a cd from my second drive, a
120 gig maxtor with NTFS and completely chkdsked, my computer just
freezes. I can't even ctrl+alt+del. But, when I boot into linux or
into safe mode, I can burn just fine. The only programs I've got
running are Norton AV and the intellimouse software. No spyware
either; I just ran Spybot and Ad-Aware and came up clean.
I've tried it with both Nero and XP's own cd-burning and had the same
problem.


Any ideas on where to go next? If it were a hardware or file system
problem I would think it would also fail in safe mode and Linux.
