just installed windows XP and my joystick (sidewinder
precision pro) is incompatable with XP. it worked very
well on windows 98. Is there any thing i can do or will i
have to buy a new joystick?

Try this...
Goto the Game Controller Control Panel
Then Add, Microsoft Sidewinder (auto-detect)...

Please note that any Profiling software that came with the gameport hardware
won't work as that was not designed for Windows XP. There are currently no
plans for updates.
