hi guys
i would like to know how you clear the entries in the startup files
found under the msconfig command. the entry has a tick removed and
does not appear in the startup on reboot. however, the line still
remains in the list. is there anyway of removing excess entries from
the msconfig command that are no longer required.

TIA

Clear disabled items from Msconfig Starutp
Line 148, Right column

This small VB Script will remove the necessary Registry entries. If you
would prefer to selectively delete items, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT
Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg

Each of these keys may contain subkeys. Each subkey is a disabled item,
either from the Registry or the Startup folder. Right click the appropriate
subkey and select Delete.

Correction, Kelly's script will allow you to selectively delete items, as
well.

I have solved my own problem. the easiest way to solve the problem is
to check all the boxes in msconfig, restart the computer. the run a
program called ashampoo winoptimizer suite 2002. one of the modules is
startup tuneup. double click this and the delete all the entries that
are not required under the registry boxes. this will then remove all
unwanted files in the startup.
