When I upgraded my Gateway to XP home my usb speakers
ceased to work. Solutions on Microsoft and Gateway don't
assist. Any ideas?

One thing that could help if you haven't already done so is installing SP1
for Windows XP. XP tends to handle USB more easily than do earlier Windows
versions.

You mentioned upgrade... I would completely uninstall the speakers:

With the speakers still plugged in, uninstall from device manager. Now,
uninstall any software related to the speakers. Disconnect the speakers.
Now, boot to safemode and in device manager for any reference to the
speakers. Reboot to normal mode and install any updated software/drivers
for the speakers. Now, re-connect the speakers. They should work.
