Barry,
Your idea gave me a lead, and I solved it the quick &
dirty way: I went to the Device Manager, View > show
hidden devices, found the Ghost device and disabled the
sucker. It's a non-existing piece of hardware anyway, so I
won't miss it ;-) The result is the same: my system
functions fine now and in time I'll forget all about this
fuzzy piece of windows/hardware hidden in a dusty corner
of my OS.
