I had the same thing happen to me. Even the arrow chevron disappeared until
manually changing one of the icons to ALWAYS SHOW. That worked but didn't
survive a reboot.

I compared the registry settings between two machines I have running XP and
noticed that the "EnableAutoTray" key is NOT present in
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer until you manually
switch it from checked (which is the default) to unchecked. So, I deleted
the key, rebooted and VOILA, it is working properly again!

Hope that helps others with the same problem.
