View Full Version : Running DOS program in XP: "OUT OF RANGE" errror

I use a DOS fractal picture generating program, Fractint. I have used
it for years in 3.1, 95 and 98, or to be more accurate the DOS
supplied with these systems.

In XP it will run, but any attempt to use a screen resolution greater
than 640 x 480 for a new picture or to view one of my existing
onegenerates the error message:"OUT OF RANGE 23kHZ 37Hz"

Can anything be done?

I have Windows 98 but XP came pre-installed on a single NTFS
partition. I do have second hard disk, which I can partition and
format at will.

I saw on the MS site that for a dual boot 98 must be installed before
XP or 98 will delete the XP boot.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q217210

Maybe I could run DOS or W98 directly off a CD? Is either of theses a
possibility? I have plenty of RAM (768KB)

Have a look at some of my fractal pictures on

Have you tried compatibility mode.

Find the program, right click on it. Goto Properties. Click on the
compatibility tab.

Check 'run this program in' and set it to 98/ME.

Then check the boxes in display settings.

Bang--- Most programs will run now.

Thanks, I hadn't, but I did, on your recommendation, Ben.

But no joy I'm afraid. Not as W95 either, or with 256 colours set.

Another option is to goto:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dosbox/

DOSBox emulates a full x86 pc with sound and dos. It's main use is to
run old dosgames on platforms which don't have dos(win2K/XP/linux/FreeBSD).

I used it to play some old dos games in WINXP. It might do the trick
in this scenario also.

Good Luck!

I hate replying to my own posts.

I found Fractint on the internet and downloaded the latest version (20 which
is still from 1995). Started it up and changed vide settings in the
program to 1024x768 and ran a few images out of it (to be honest I don't
know how to use it). Anyways it seems to be running fine on my machine.

Found it:

Maybe you just needed a fresh copy.

Hope this works out.

Thanks for your suggestions Ben. I'll try them out and report back.
Probably in a day or two now. I do have version 20 though and recently
downloaded.

I have seen some discussion though around these problems with Fractint
and XP. Seems to work better for some people than others. Efforts are
being made to port it to Windows.

Fractint is not the easiest program in the world to use, but it is the
standard in fractal graphics.I can't do half the things it is supposed
to do, but I've done some exploration of the Mandelbrot set.

Thanks again

Rob

No joy with DOSBox, Ben, It crashes if I try to run Fractint.

Thanks just the same though.
