Registering XP

Hi
My nephew has bought a new computer which has windows XP
preinstalled on it. I have read you have to register XP or
it will expire after 30days.
The pc will be delivered tomorow Saturday and I'am going
to help him set it up getting an ISP installing the
printer etc so what I need to know as I don't have XP
myself is how do I register it will I be prompted at start
up? Also there is something about having to have a User
Account because his brother will be shareing the pc with
him they will need an account each and should I create a
user account before getting on the internet?

Activation is required. On a new computer with Windows XP pre-installed the
OEM will have already activated Windows XP. No action on your part needed.

Registration is optional. Before you start the computer connect it to a
telephone line. When you first start the computer you will be prompted to
register. Registration can be submitted prior to having an ISP.

When you first start Windows XP you will be prompted to establish user
accounts. You can do so then or later. Windows Help and Support has
direction for establishing user accounts. You do not need to be on the
internet to establish a user account.

The new computer should have startup directions. Suggest you read and
follow. When you first start Windows XP do not connect anything except the
telephone line and speakers. For other external hardware such as printers,
you should wait until after you have setup your ISP. Then go to the
manufacturers web site and download the latest Windows XP drivers and
software for the external hardware and follow directions for installing the
drivers and software and connecting the hardware.

With an OEM copy of XP installed on a new machine it should already be activated. Be very very sure that you get a recovery disk or are told how to get access to any hidden partitions for recovery purposes. If you are lucky then the OEM recovery disk will
actually be a complete copy of XP. If you want to verify that your XP has been activated then look in the windows\system32 folder for wpa.dbl . This is your activation file. You may have to go into the folder options and enable the display of hidden and
system folders before you will find the windows\system32 folder. For your own information you can copy the wpa.dbl to a floppy disk and if you ever have to format your drive and reinstall XP on the same machine you only have to copy this file back from th
e floppy to the windows\system32 folder and you will be activated without the need to connect to the internet or by phone. Don't bother trying to read the file it is heavily encrypted at the time of activation and contains your hardware profile and activat
