XP won't see second drive...Help, Please!

I'm using a dell desktop that came with xp installed.
Had to perform a clean install today, and afterwards my
second hard drive -- where my data is backed up -- does
not appear on "my computer".

Device manager and Disk Management both see the drive,
but will not assign a letter.

I checked all cables and jumpers. Nothing else had
changed from before the clean install. XP simply won't
recognize the drive.

I have backup data on the disk, so I don't want to
reformat.

It is NTFS, and Disk Management shows its status
as 'healthy (active)'.

Any ideas much appreciated.
