View Full Version : Will Microsoft Works run...

I`m trying to find out if Microsoft Works Suite 2003 will
run on my XP even though I have no previous versions of
Word installed? I also don`t know the difference between
software and software Suites. Thanks for any answers and
excuse my ignorance.

I don't know the answer to your question, but DO NOT confuse WORD AND
WORKS, they are two different programs.

WORD is included in WORKS SUITE but not the plain WORKS 7.
WORKS is a full package and will install all components. It
is the least expensive way to get WORD. But it is not a
valid upgrade path to MS OFFICE XP.

Yes Works Suite 2003 works flawlessly with Windows XP. A software suite is a
"group" of programs bundled together. They can be installed individually or
at the same time using the suite's installer.

Not exactly. Although they are sold as two different packages,
Microsoft Works Suite 2003 does include Microsoft Word.
The answer to Vincent's question is yes, it will run.
The diffence between software and software Suites is basically
that a "suite" tends to be a group of programs rather than just a
single one. But it's important to recognize that these are just
marketing terms, and there's no law requiring that such terms be
used consistently; I'd be very wary of trying to read too much
into the words.

That may be, I have not look at Works in a long time; however, in earlier
days the Works word processing then was very different than the Word. I
have the package now, Word, Excel and Outlook and do not like any of them.
I use Word Perfect, a really old version and Lotus 123, also a really old
version. They work perfectly and do not cause any interference with Outlook
Express or any other program. Outlook and Excel are, in my opinion, not
user friendly and interfer with other functions. Outlook is a real pain in
as much as it wants to control the Address Book, know as Contacts. Wife has
a new Dell, along with XP and Microsoft stuff and it was a real pain to get
it working the way we wish without interference from Outlook and Word.
However, for her to address a envelope she has to use the functions which is
a hassle, whereas in Word Perfect it is just there. However, I would like a
answer to one question, when selecting a configuration for a Dell computer
there is the Office, which is the Word selection and the Works selection, so
there must be some difference.

Yes, it still is very different. We are talking about Works Suite
here, not Works. Regular Works doesn't include Word, but Works
Suite does.

All of this is fine. You're entitled to prefer and choose
whatever products you prefer. I personally prefer WordPerfect to
Word, Outlook to Outlook Express, and Excel to 123.
But what I prefer or you prefer is really irrelevant to this
discussion.

To answer the question, Microsoft word and works are 2 different things. Works is a package that includes several programs where word is ONE program which is used to create documents. Word is usually sold in both the WORKS suite and the OFFICE suite. The difference between office and works are the OTHER software programs such as EXCEL for office, and the Works spreadsheet for microsoft works. Works also includes a database program that is similar to Access in the OFFICE suite.

WORKS has a word processor, spreadsheet and a database.
OFFICE has a word processor, a spreadsheet, a presentation
program, a PIM and may have a database.
WORKS SUITE has two word processors, WORD and WORKS word
processor.
OFFICE has free converter that can be downloaded for WORKS
file types.
