View Full Version : windows xp load time
Connie
December 5th 03, 01:17 AM
Perennial issue with windows I know...
when we first got our brand new XP (home) system, I was
at least pleased that the start up windows load time was
less than 98's. Of course the processor is faster too...
but even though I have removed, rather than added to, the
tray loading programs, and disabled many of
xp's "helpful" services, the load time just seems to
increase and increase.
Is this a sign that we need to do a defrag, or...?????
The only things besides services and HP things (This is a
hp pavillion) [that were all there when this was new]
that are starting are my firewall, norton anti virus, and
the volume control. (Not counting when quicktime puts
itself back in there!!)
How can I tame it back to when it was starting well??
Its only been about 3 months.

Slow start! For delays before the icons appear on the Desktop use the =
Bootvis.exe tool -the download on the link page which follows:
http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/default.asp
Otherwise I would look in Event Viewer at the logged errors.
1. To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click =
Administrative Tools, double-click Event Viewer and select System for =
system errors or Application for application errors. Look for Error in =
the Type column and double click on Error to reveal a Description of the =
error. This can be copied by using Clipboard Viewer (see later).
=20
2. Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you =
should double click for further information and you can copy using copy =
and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)
3. For some errors you will find "+ Related Knowledge Base Article", =
which if double clicked takes you to the Knowledge Base Article =
containing a suggested solution.
There always seems to be a step 2 but not always a step 3.=20
A tip for posting copies of Error Reports (Step 1). Run Event Viewer and =
double click on the error you want to copy. In the window which appears =
is a button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close =
Event Viewer. Now start your message ( email )and do a paste into the =
body of the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer =
Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the =
first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. It can be helpful to place =
a shortcut to Event Viewer on your Desktop.
Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and =
use it to remove parasites.
How good is your housekeeping?
1. In Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder.
2. In Outlook Express run File, Folder, Compact All whilst OFFLINE.
3. Run Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk =
Cleanup.
4. Run Disk Defragmenter.=20

Thanks. I could ot get that page to perform properly,
maybe its my firewall, but I got there through a link
from google. I have heard of that program but I wasnt
sure I needed it. I didnt want a "speedy" boot, Im not
impatient, I just wanted it to go back to how it was,
more or less.
It does seem to be slow after the icons as well.

Hmm, theres only one recurring error with every boot, one
of the services, I probably disbled it. The text is
generic, and the link is nonworking at microsoft (goes to
generic pages.)
Any way to know if I need that service or whatever is
erroring? As far as I could tell, I used the tweaks to
disable things I wasnt using so they wouldnt all load.
I dont really want to trade working memory space for boot
up speed.
Here's the paste of the error, which was from the system
section.

I usually dont use OE, I havbe been using web based for
simplicity, but did a little clean up, not much to take
out.

Haven't put ad-aware on this computer yet... I like it,
but have found before if I let it remove everything it
thinks is suspicious you can create major problems,
(system never ran right again!) so Im a little gun shy.
Thinking of installing spyware blaster.
I do have norton av auto-protect running, so Im pretty
sure the system is clean.
>4. Run Disk Defragmenter.
Hoping to avoid defrag if I could, that takes eons. Have
to run at night I guess.
How often is it really required for good maintenance?

Thanks Gerry... by the way, do you not use the word wrap
when you post, or is it just that this was a cut and
paste text, as it was hard to read because it didnt wrap
to window. I am reading with the web based, but usually
the posts I look at are all wrapped at reasonable line
length. (The quopted reply wraps perfectly of course!)

thanks Ray, that seems to be the concensus.
However, using the web-based newsgroup access there is no
attachment...and no offense to you personally, but I dont
think anyone should _ever_ download an attached file from
a public newsgroup.
It's just an avoidable security risk. Posting a working
download link from a recognized web site would be
sufficient as well as a great timesaver.
Thanks for the tips on how to run it.
I'll post an update after I've installed and see if
theres any improvement.
