Are you allowed to make a backup copy of windows xp and if
so how do you do it. I mean is there a certain way you
would have to burn it

Yes, that's part of Fair Use. Create an ISO9660 image and burn that to a
CD-R.

Take a magic marker and write the serial number on the inside of the case
for your PC that way you will not lose it.

Any CD Burning software that can do a CD->CD copy like Nero or Easy CD
Creator will do this. You need to be able to do the CD->CD copy so that the
resulting copy of your XP CD is bootable. XP's built in software can't do
that with out third party software. There are free programs that you can
use. This is nice freebie http://w1.737.telia.com/~u73702956/

The ISO Recorder from here
http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm is a freeware add-on that
creates an ISO image of a CD and then enables XP's software to burn it.
