For some reason, my XP cd isn't bootable, so is there any way I can extract
the boot sector from a disc that IS bootable, and integrate it with the
files on my XP cd?

Greetings --

Actually, all legitimate retail WinXP CDs are supposed to be
bootable. Are you certain that your obtained yours from a reputable
source?

Is your CD drive set as first boot device in BIOS? Are you sure your
hardware is capable of booting from the CD drive? Computers built in the
last few years should have this capability but there are always exceptions.
Another way to go (if the reason you need to boot from the CD is to install
XP) is to download the XP setup disk set from MS.

If the CD is legit and the BIOS is set to boot from the CD-Rom drive prior
to booting a hard drive then look for a message that says "press any key to
boot CD......" It is only displayed for 5 secs and if a key is not pressed
the boot sequence moves to the next device.

Erm... No, I am quite certain that it isn't from a reputable source!

So you've leading us on all along, saying things like "for some
reason, my XP cd isn't bootable," and professing to have no idea
why, when all along you've known why. How nice of you!

Sorry I tried to help.

I beg your pardon? I had no idea that was the reason, I assure you, if I
knew, I would have said so. There's no need for unfounded sarcasm. I'm
grateful that you tried to help, but you're wrong.

If you mean that sincerely, I apologize, but it certainly didn't
seem so from your messages.

On the other hand, if you're a software pirate looking for help,
I withdraw my apology. I still have no interest in helping you.

Well, obviously I would be totally undeserving of any help from
somebody as morally superior as yourself. I can't believe you even
bothered to stoop as low as replying to my message.

I was being sincere, and although my XP disc hasn't come from a
"reputable source", I'm certainly no software pirate. As for your
withdrawn apology, I suggest you take that, along with the help that
you're not interested in giving me, and shove it somewhere unpleasant.
I don't want help from somebody as self-important as you.
